We break it down for you here listing the 9 divisions of lilies and showcasing some of the most beautiful varieties.
Lily Symbolism
In Greek mythology, the lily is associated with Hera, the Greek Goddess of Love and Marriage. According to one version of the myth, the Milky Way was created by drops of her breastmilk and the few droplets which fell to earth created lilies. In Christianity, the lily, particularly the Madonna Lily, is associated with the Virgin Mary as a representation of her purity and chastity.
Other symbolic meanings of lilies are based on their colors but also varies depending on the culture. Generally, though, lilies embody purity, grace beauty, royalty, and rebirth. The following is a list of more color-specific symbolism.
- White Lilies symbolize innocence, modesty, and grace.
- Yellow Lilies symbolize good health, happiness, and gratitude.
- Light Pink Lilies symbolize generosity, elegance, and femininity.
- Dark Pink Lilies symbolize abundance, prosperity, and ambition.
- Red Lilies symbolize passion, romance, and desire.
- Orange Lilies symbolize confidence, pride, and wealth.
Basic Lily Facts
“True Lilies” are members of a diverse group of plants from the genus Lilium. They are easily identified because true lilies have 6 petals and 6 anthers (which is the part of the stamen containing the pollen). Usually, lilies are towering, upright plants with blossoms in the form of trumpets, bells, or round-shaped. Lilies come in nearly all colors, except blue, and several display variegated patterns, spots, or freckles.
Lilies are known to be a sweetly fragrant bloom, but there are varieties that have no scent. To help organize all the lily varieties, 9 botanical divisions have been created to classify them.
