Throughout history, there have been many women who were not only mothers but also pioneers, innovators, and trailblazers. Here are just a few of those amazing moms throughout history – without them, the world would be a different place! 

For instance, Dorothy Hodgkin was a Nobel-Prize winning biochemist credited with significantly improving healthcare. She discovered the structure of penicillin, insulin, and Vitamin B12, and was also a leading pioneer in X-ray crystallography. Then there was  Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who was the mother of seven children – and worked as an abolitionist alongside some of the greatest activists of her time, such as Frederick Douglas. When caring for her children made it hard for Elizabeth to leave the home very often, she participated by writing speeches for Susan B. Anthony.

Perhaps the ultimate Mother’s Day story in history is that of  Anna Maria Jarvis. She worked tirelessly to improve health and sanitation conditions in order to conquer infant mortality, and during the Civil War, her organization “Mother’s Day Work Clubs”  nursed soldiers from both sides of the battle. After the war, Jarvis rallied the members to organize a “Mother’s Friendship Day”,  an opportunity for grieving mothers from both the North & the South to meet in solidarity and comfort each other. After Jarvis died, her daughter was determined to honor her mother, resulting in our modern-day Mother’s Day.
